Cabinet of Curiosities is a richly illustrated image archive from Vault Editions, bringing together 195 meticulously restored engravings, woodcuts, and anatomical plates drawn from the great age of collecting, when princes, physicians, and scholars gathered the wonders of the world into a single room. Preserved specimens and two-headed fawns, narwhal tusks once sold as unicorn horns, basilisks and sea serpents, Egyptian bird mummies, samurai armour, and dissected skulls resting against sheets of music — this collection assembles the strange, the rare, and the marvellous as the old Wunderkammer once displayed them.
Sourced from rare historical volumes and carefully restored for modern use, these images are ideal for tattoo artists, graphic designers, illustrators, collage artists, and anyone drawn to natural history, anatomy, and the esoteric. Whether you are designing a book cover, a tattoo flash sheet, a brand identity, or a mixed media artwork, this archive offers an extraordinary depth of material to explore.
The collection is arranged into five themed chapters echoing the categories of the original cabinets:
- Naturalia — the natural world in all its variety, from Frederik Ruysch's preserved specimens and exotic birds-of-paradise to scorpions, beetles, corals, fossils, and crystalline minerals
- Monstrosa — the anomalous and the imagined, including hydras, dragons, griffins, mandrake roots, Jenny Hanivers, and the marvellous creatures after Aldrovandi
- Scientifica — the apparatus of discovery, from anatomical dissections after Vesalius and Bidloo to telescopes, surgical instruments, globes, and celestial diagrams
- Exotica — the wider world beyond the collector's own, with Egyptian colossi and artefacts, ancient bronzes, idols, and ritual figures
- Artificialia — the achievements of human craft, including full plate armour, samurai gusoku, grotesque parade helmets, ships of the line, and early diving apparatus
